AL.com: “Madison County Commission Chairman Dale Strong, a Republican candidate for the 5th District congressional district, says he will fight an effort to remove him from the GOP primary ballot for his part in moving a Confederate statue from the county courthouse grounds.
“My understanding is to be taken off the ballot they’ve got to prove I’m not a Republican, and that will never happen,” Strong said Thursday.
Julie Clausen, chairman of the Morgan County Republican Executive Committee, confirmed today that the Limestone and Morgan County executive committees have both voted to challenge Strong’s right to be on the GOP ballot.
“It was entirely about the monument,” Morgan County Vice Chairman John Mays said today. “The Legislature has made it a crime (to move such statues), he moved it, and he knew it was against the law.”
[Saturday was] the last day to file ballot challenges with the state party. The party says it won’t comment on any challenges until its review and decision process are finished. That must happen before March 3 when the state certifies the primary ballots.”
