Regular readers surely noticed this site has gone dormant for a while. This site has been running, with a break around 2015 to 2018, for over a decade now. It has been a wonderful experience that allowed me, Brent Caldwell, a way to make a small contribution to the Southern progressive movement. Updating the site regularly for these past years helped me keep track of developments across the region. I hope the few thousand readers we built up in that time also got value from it.
But I need to take a break for now. This happened once before when I was in law school. This time the reason is threefold: First and foremost, I am working on other political efforts. I recently ran for Congress in North Carolina’s 14th District and I am now trying to publish a couple pieces a month on my Substack, the Yellow Dog Dispatch (Brent Caldwell | Substack). Secondly, I have three kids ages 1, 3, and 6, and they demand and deserve a significant amount of my time and attention. I can no longer wake up thirty minutes early, review the headlines, and get the posts out. Instead, I wake up an hour early, because the baby will not go back to sleep, and I am still somehow late getting my kids out the door two hour later. Finally, for the last fourteen months I have been building a solo practice as an attorney. While it is going well, the financial stability and security that can provide will be invaluable to me politically and is also a responsibility of mine I must prioritize.
I will keep the site up and hope to return to it. The truth is I enjoyed creating this record as much as I was excited by the idea that others might appreciate it. Seeing progressive activists and politicians take a stand across the South, the stronghold of American conservativism, gives me hope that the arc of history is bending our way and that in time we shall, indeed, overcome. I hope you got the same thing out of it.
If you wish to continue to follow my efforts or this topic, please follow me on my Substack Brent Caldwell | Substack and continue to do your part to keep the faith wherever you are in the region and the nation.
Sincerely,
Brent “Yellow Dog” Caldwell
