North Carolina state Representative Carla Cunningham has switched her voter affiliation from Democrat to unaffiliated. She lost her March primary bid after Democrats and Gov. Stein actively campaigned against her — punishment for giving House Republicans the one vote they needed to override Stein’s veto of a bill mandating cooperation between state sheriffs and federal immigration enforcement. In a blistering floor speech before her vote, Cunningham said: “It is time for my unapologetic truth to be shared with all of you… all cultures are not equal. Some immigrants come and believe they can function in isolation, refusing to adapt.” She had served seven terms representing north Charlotte’s District 106.\n\n— WBTV Charlotte, April 24, 2026
