WaPo: “A judge on [August 28] ordered a new trial for three former Memphis police officers convicted on federal charges brought over the death of Tyre Nichols after he was beaten following a traffic stop in January 2023.
U.S. District Judge Sheryl H. Lipman ordered the new trial after hearing arguments from defense lawyers, who said that the judge who had presided over the trial was biased because he believed at least one of the officers was in a gang.
Lipman told prosecutors and defense attorneys to provide arguments by Sept. 15 on which counts are to be tried again. The former Memphis Police Department detectives, Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean and Justin Smith, brought the motion for the new trial.”
