WaPo: “The Virginia Military Institute board voted Friday not to renew the contract of its first Black superintendent, a move that led his detractors to claim vindication but sparked outcry from others who say the school’s top leader was targeted for efforts to make the campus more inclusive.
Retired Army Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins was hired as superintendent four years ago amid allegations of widespread racism at the nation’s oldest state-supported military college. A VMI spokesman said Wins intends to stay on until his contract expires at the end of June….
Friday’s 10-6 vote against extending Wins’s contract came after VMI board members met for more than two hours in closed session. Once the open portion of the meeting resumed, board members sat around a long table with Wins in the middle.”
