WaPo: “Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has granted clemency to a former Fairfax County police sergeant who fatally shot an unarmed man thought to have stolen sunglasses.
Wesley Shifflett was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday, but spent just two nights in jail before walking free just before 8 p.m. Sunday, his attorney Caleb Kershner told The Washington Post.
…The governor commuted the sentence Sunday night, writing in a statement that the three years of incarceration went beyond the state’s sentencing guidelines. Fairfax County Circuit Judge Randy Bellows, who issued the sentence, did not respond to a request for comment Sunday night.”
