Live5News: “Members of the International Longshoremen’s Association gathered at the State House Thursday to protest anti-union statements made by Gov. Henry McMaster.
ILA President Charles Brave said they want McMaster to apologize specifically for anti-worker comments he made in his State of the State Address.
In his Jan. 24 address, McMaster said one thing the state does not need is more labor unions.
“We have gotten where we are without them, and we do not need them now: We are a right to work state. We have the lowest union membership in the country,” he said during the speech.
He also said the state’s prosperity and “that of generations of South Carolinians to come face a clear and present danger from the big labor unions,” adding that he will not let the Biden Administration’s pro-union sentiments chip away at South Carolina’s economic interests.
The ILA gathered at its headquarters in Charleston days after the speech to refute these comments. One speaker at that meeting said unions are important because they give a voice to marginalized workers.”
