AR Times: “Medical issues prompted Arkansas State Treasurer Mark Lowery to announce his retirement Tuesday afternoon, according to a press release from his office. Lowery will remain in the post until Sept. 30.
Upon Lowery’s departure, Chief of Staff Stephen Bright and Deputy Treasurer Eric Munson will run the show until Gov. Sarah Sanders makes an appointment.
Lowery’s retirement comes on the heels of two strokes in the past six months, one in March and another in June. The severity of the June stroke led Lowery and his family to decide he will retire and focus on his health, a press release noted.
Before serving as treasurer, Lowery worked as chief of staff for then-Lt. Gov. Mike Huckabee in the ‘90s. He also served five terms in the Arkansas legislature.
“It was the joy of his life traveling across Arkansas and building lasting relationships with constituents throughout the state,” Lowery’s family said in a statement. “Every moment of every day he lived his dream by serving others and fighting for Arkansans.””
