{"id":90692,"date":"2022-01-26T16:27:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T16:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yellowdogwire.com\/?p=90692"},"modified":"2022-01-26T16:27:04","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T16:27:04","slug":"federal-judges-block-alabama-u-s-house-map-order-2nd-majority-black-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yellowdogwire.com\/?p=90692","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Federal judges block Alabama U.S House map, order 2nd majority-black\u00a0district&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/chickenfriedpolitics.com\/2022\/01\/25\/federal-judges-block-alabama-u-s-house-map-order-2nd-black-district\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chicken Fried Politics:<\/a> &#8220;With candidate qualifying already underway for this year\u2019s midterm election, a panel of federal judges have thrown a chunk of concrete into Alabama\u2019s political pond, telling state legislators that they will have to recraft the state\u2019s US House map to add a second majority-black district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unless a higher court intervenes, the January 24 decision will almost certainly mean another Democrat will join the state\u2019s seven-member House delegation and one of the five sitting Republicans may have to run in unfamiliar territory in North Alabama to stay in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three-judge panel \u2014 which included two judges appointed by Donald Trump \u2014 gave lawmakers in the Republican-controlled legislature 14 days to pass a new map; otherwise, they will hire their own experts and take over the process themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny remedial plan will need to include two districts in which Black voters either comprise a voting-age majority or something quite close to it,\u201d the judges said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The judges also extended qualifying for the May 24 primary until February 11, although the timetable for both qualifying and the primary could shift as legal wrangling continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamaag.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Attorney General Steve Merrill<\/a>\u00a0announced the state would appeal the ruling, saying he \u201cstrongly disagreed\u201d with the judges\u2019 conclusion that the map passed by legislators last year ran afoul of the federal Voting Rights Act.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chicken Fried Politics: &#8220;With candidate qualifying already underway for this year\u2019s midterm election, a panel of federal judges have thrown a chunk of concrete into Alabama\u2019s political pond, telling state legislators that they will have to recraft the state\u2019s US House map to add a second majority-black district.
