Without the 50-plus Democratic lawmakers, Texas Republicans are denied a quorum to pass their new voting restrictions. The special session called by Gov. Greg Abbott is set to end on August 7th. The Texas Democrats vow to stay away from the state until after August 7th.&#8221;We are living on borrowed time in Texas,\u201d top House Democrats\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/texas-democrats-voting-restrictions\/2021\/07\/12\/99d35154-e326-11eb-8aa5-5662858b696e_story.html?utm_campaign=wp_politics_am&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;wpisrc=nl_politics&amp;carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F3422c50%2F60ed7c3e9d2fda945a01e064%2F596b4ee3ae7e8a44e7d55e6c%2F27%2F56%2F60ed7c3e9d2fda945a01e064\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cWe need Congress to act now to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to protect Texans \u2014 and all Americans \u2014 from the Trump Republicans\u2019 nationwide war on democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The massive Texas bill &#8220;includes a number of restrictions championed by former president Donald Trump. The measures would ban several election programs implemented last year to help people vote during the coronavirus pandemic, including drive-through voting and 24-hour and late-night voting. Voting rights advocates noted that\u00a0<em>voters of color disproportionately<\/em>\u00a0used these programs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>A war on democracy? Yeah, with no prisoners. Why aren&#8217;t US Senate Democrats on a war-footing rather than eternally whistling through the graveyard &#8212; &#8220;Someone&#8211;\u00a0<em>someone<\/em>\u00a0might get mad if we did\u00a0<em>that<\/em>. Or that. Or for that matter that.&#8221; Someone might get mad.
