Whether memory or decency has faded from the Republican political class is a question I leave to others&#8230;.The \u201cAmerica First\u201d caucus may have been scotched, but the idea was more evidence that the GOP defines \u201cAmerican\u201d as anyone who looks and thinks like they do \u2013 and no one else. The language in their would-have-been \u201cpolicy platform\u201d (find the link yourself; it\u2019s all over Twitter) is a toxic brew of dog-whistles, racist call-outs, and historical errors. I\u2019ll address them one at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>America is a nation with a border, and a culture, strengthened by a common respect for uniquely Anglo-Saxon political traditions\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may come as a surprise to the Scotch-Irish-Americans who fought in the Revolutionary War, to say nothing of their ancestors north of Hadrian\u2019s Wall who formed their own Parliament in the 13th Century \u2026 or the Irish-Americans who bore the brunt of \u201cAnglo-Saxon political traditions.\u201d That Paul Gosar (himself a Catholic) would somehow miss that is \u2026 well, he\u2019s not the brightest bit of galactic dust, so there\u2019s that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving on, A1C strangely goes back to linguistic legerdemain to pretend they really mean \u201cjust white people welcome.\u201d&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bearing Drift: &#8220;There was a time when the memory of the hideous behavior of the 1930s \u201cAmerica First\u201d committee was enough to keep any decent politician away from that moniker.
