But was it?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/01\/13\/south-carolina-revolutionary-war-yorktown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WaPo<\/a>: &#8220;South Carolina\u2019s new license plate, now one of two default options in the state, features a simple slogan: \u201cWhere the Revolutionary War Was Won.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The change, part of the state\u2019s celebration of the nation\u2019s 250th birthday, recognizes South Carolina\u2019s contributions in the Revolutionary War, which helped secure victory for the Continental Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The problem, however, is that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/york\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the National Park Service<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/america250\/founders-museum\/major-events\/timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the White House<\/a>&nbsp;and essentially everyone who was once an American schoolchild agree that the war ended when British Gen. Charles Cornwallis surrendered in Yorktown, Virginia, on Oct. 19, 1781.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So, was the Revolutionary War won in South Carolina?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s not incorrect,\u201d said S. Max Edelson, who teaches about colonial South Carolina at the University of Virginia, \u201cbut it doesn\u2019t mean what you think it means.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Edelson is one of four historians who told The Washington Post that the Battle of Yorktown was the war\u2019s final major military battle.
