Greg Abbott is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/01\/25\/immigration-texas-federal-government\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defying the authority of the federal government<\/a>\u00a0just as other Southern governors did before the Civil War and during the fight over school desegregation. Like presidents before him,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/candidates\/joe-biden-2024\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u00a0has the right \u2014 and, ultimately, the duty \u2014 to uphold the Constitution, including by force&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In a jaw-dropping statement last week,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/01\/26\/texas-border-dispute-breeds-loose-talk-civil-war-resistance-right\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abbott echoed the secessionist rhetoric<\/a>\u00a0of the Confederacy.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/texas-border-stunt-is-based-on-a-confederate-legal-theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">He claimed that the federal government<\/a>\u00a0\u201chas broken the compact between the United States and the States\u201d and that, therefore, Texas has \u201cthe right of self-defense.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What can Biden do to overcome Abbott\u2019s defiance?&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/immigration\/2024\/01\/27\/biden-immigration-policy-trump\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plenty, if he wants<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 1957, three years after the Supreme Court\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1940-1955\/347us483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">landmark decision<\/a>\u00a0ending segregation in the public schools, Arkansas Gov.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov\/research\/online-documents\/civil-rights-little-rock-school-integration-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orval Faubus deployed National Guard troops<\/a>\u00a0to prevent the first nine Black students from enrolling at all-White Little Rock Central High School. President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned Faubus to back off and obey the Supreme Court ruling, but Faubus refused&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Biden surely does not relish going so far as to federalize the Texas National Guard, seizing command from Abbott. But Eisenhower and Kennedy did not want to take that step, either. They tried hard to persuade Faubus and Wallace to obey the Supreme Court, and when the governors refused to comply, the presidents did what they saw as their duty.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WaPo: &#8220;Texas Gov.
