Paxton was accused of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/09\/07\/ken-paxton-impeachment-trial-ryan-bangert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">misusing the powers of the attorney general\u2019s office<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/08\/29\/ken-paxton-nate-paul-brandon-cammack-impeachment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">help his friend and donor<\/a>\u00a0Nate Paul, an Austin real estate investor who was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/06\/09\/nate-paul-federal-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under federal investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The House impeachment managers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/09\/15\/ken-paxton-impeachment-trial-closing-arguments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insisted that they proved their claims<\/a>\u00a0of bribery and corruption, arguing that the jury of 30 senators had no choice but to convict. Paxton\u2019s defense team successfully argued that the case was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/09\/15\/ken-paxton-impeachment-trial-closing-arguments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full of holes, circumstantial evidence and misdirection<\/a>&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a joke for us to have to go through this,\u201d said defense attorney Dan Cogdell, who derided the bipartisan House-led impeachment as \u201ca sham.\u201d \u201cThis should have never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House impeachment managers who drove the effort to oust Paxton disagreed, saying in a separate Capitol news conference that it was the vote to acquit that deserved condemnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cManagers presented overwhelming evidence that Ken Paxton is the most corrupt politician in the state of Texas at this time,\u201d said Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/ann-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ann Johnson<\/a>, a Houston Democrat and vice chair of the House team. \u201cAnd the Republicans in the Texas Senate just returned him to the office of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VoteAnnJohnson\/status\/1703121009925042522?s=20\">top cop<\/a>.\u201d&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TX Tribune: &#8220;Texas senators have acquitted\u00a0Attorney General\u00a0Ken Paxton\u00a0on\u00a016 articles of impeachment.
