The tragedy sparked Lee, a Republican, to urge the General Assembly to pass legislation that would keep firearms away from people who could harm themselves or others. But instead, GOP leaders moved to quickly adjourn rather than take up the governor\u2019s request in the remaining days of an already chaotic session.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/texas-mass-shootings-assault-weapons-raise-the-age-state-legislature\/\" target=\"_blank\">CBS News<\/a>: &#8220;Texas state lawmakers on Monday moved forward with a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=88R&amp;Bill=HB2744\" target=\"_blank\">gun control<\/a>\u00a0bill in a surprise move that came just hours after families of mass shooting victims had begged them to take action in the wake of the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/texas-allen-premium-outlets-mass-shooting-multiple-fatalities\/\" target=\"_blank\">rampage Saturday at a mall<\/a>\u00a0in Allen that left eight dead.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State House lawmakers on Monday voted a bill out of committee that would raise the legal age to buy an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/assault-weapons-ban-biden-congress-monterey-park-half-moon-bay-shootings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assault-style weapon<\/a>&nbsp;to 21, as well as prohibit firearm sales to those who are intoxicated or who have a protective order against them. Two Republicans joined all the Democrats on the committee to support the bill in an 8-5 vote. Families from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/school-shooting-in-uvalde-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uvalde<\/a>, who have fiercely advocated for the bill, burst into applause after the vote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday marked the last day the measure could be advanced out of the committee for a floor vote before the legislative session ends on May 29.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of the vote Monday, the families from Uvalde and Sutherland Springs \u2014 the site of a horrific\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/texas-church-shooting-devin-patrick-kelley-first-baptist-church-sutherland-springs-live-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\">church shooting in 2017<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 pleaded with lawmakers to bring the legislation to the floor.\u00a0&#8220;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Political Wire: \u201cTennessee Gov.
