{"id":107554,"date":"2023-01-30T20:21:08","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T20:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yellowdogwire.com\/?p=107554"},"modified":"2023-01-30T20:21:11","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T20:21:11","slug":"higher-ed-advocate-conservative-commentators-call-for-radical-unc-system-overhaul-is-off-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yellowdogwire.com\/?p=107554","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Higher ed advocate: Conservative commentator\u2019s call for radical UNC System overhaul is off-base&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pulse.ncpolicywatch.org\/2023\/01\/30\/higher-ed-advocate-conservative-commentators-call-for-radical-unc-system-overhaul-is-off-base\/#sthash.hWiBzRTX.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">NC Policy Watch<\/a>: &#8220;Some folks measure the value of higher education solely by how much its graduates make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us know there\u2019s a&nbsp;<strong><em><u>lot<\/u><\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;more to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carolinajournal.com\/opinion\/lets-really-reform-state-universities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a column last week<\/a>, John Hood of the John Locke Foundation contends that North Carolinians don\u2019t receive an adequate return on what he calls a \u201crelatively large\u201d investment in the University of North Carolina System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a classic example of viewing education as a private rather than public good, Hood cites a Texas-based outfit that measures return on investment only by comparing the earnings of graduates. By\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/freopp.org\/ranking-the-50-state-public-university-systems-on-prices-outcomes-3d807df8121d\" target=\"_blank\">its measure<\/a>, the University of South Dakota ranks best in the country in lifetime returns&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding such programs, even Hood acknowledges \u201cmost of the students who enter them know very well their chosen careers are unlikely to be lucrative. They have chosen those careers because they value other forms of compensation more \u2014 personal fulfillment, a calling to help others, or a desire to live and work in a particular kind of community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carolinajournal.com\/opinion\/lets-really-reform-state-universities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">goes on to suggest<\/a>&nbsp;they can be reduced to two- or three-year degrees, without explaining how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hood conveniently omits&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/EnactedLegislation\/Constitution\/NCConstitution.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the state constitution\u2019s mandate<\/a>&nbsp;to provide North Carolinians with a college education for \u201cas far as practicable \u2026 free of expense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And to contend that the state doesn\u2019t see substantial return on investment from its investment in the UNC System is simply absurd.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NC Policy Watch: &#8220;Some folks measure the value of higher education solely by how much its graduates make.
